About the Pink-necked Green Pigeon

Identifying Features

If a Pink-necked Green Pigeon flies by, and you don't look closely, most likely you'd be thinking, "Hmm, another Rock Pigeon." But it's not! Look closely, and you'll notice how beautiful they are. The male Pink-necked Green Pigeon has a greyish head and neck. Its underside is orangy in the middle, and greenish at the lower half. The back of the pigeon is olive-green, and there are yellow and black fringes on its wings. Its tail is grey on the top, and the underside near its tail is yellow and black. The female is overall a olive-green and yellowish shade, less colorful than the male. But the female has the same yellow and black streaks on its feathers, and its underside is the same fluffy looking yellow and black. Both male and female have red eyes.

Where Can You Usually Find Them?

Pink-necked Green Pigeons are surprisingly common, and I've spotted them in many neighborhood playground and park areas. I usually see them in trees with berries or fruits, such as the palm tree which is quite common in HDB blocks. In fact I once saw a male Pink-necked Green Pigeon in a Ciku tree, eating away at the fruit! The Pigeons are rather shy though, and they tend to fly away if they sense you staring, or if they notice you inching closer. I usually spot them in pairs, looking like a pair of lovey-dovey birds.
